Iron-Coupled Anaerobic Oxidation of Methane in Marine Sediments: A Review

چکیده
Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is one the major processes oxidizing in marine sediments. Up to now, extensive studies about AOM coupled sulfate reduction have been conducted because SO42− most abundant electron acceptor seawater and shallow However, other terminal acceptors AOM, such as NO3−, NO2−, Mn(IV), Fe(III), are more energetically favorable than SO42−. Iron oxides, part components deep sediments, might play a significant role an process, mainly below sulfate–methane interface, mediated by physiologically related microorganisms. Iron-coupled possibly dominant non-sulfate-dependent process consume ecosystems. In this review, conditions for iron-coupled summarized, forms iron oxides microbial mechanisms discussed.

Anaerobic methane oxidation in Black Sea sediments
Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) and sulfate reduction (SRR) were investigated in sediments of the western Black Sea, where methane transport is controlled by diffusion. To understand the regulation and dynamics of methane production and oxidation in the Black Sea, rates of methanogenesis, AOM, and SRR were determined using ra-5 diotracers in combination with pore water chemistry and stable...
متن کاملAnaerobic methane oxidation in low-organic content methane seep sediments
Sulfate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is the key sedimentary microbial process limiting methane emissions from marine sediments and methane seeps. In this study, we investigate how the presence of low-organic content sediment influences the capacity and efficiency of AOM at Bullseye vent, a gas hydrate-bearing cold seep offshore of Vancouver Island, Canada. The upper 8 m of sed...
متن کاملManganese- and iron-dependent marine methane oxidation.
Anaerobic methanotrophs help regulate Earth's climate and may have been an important part of the microbial ecosystem on the early Earth. The anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is often thought of as a sulfate-dependent process, despite the fact that other electron acceptors are more energetically favorable. Here, we show that microorganisms from marine methane-seep sediment in the Eel River B...
متن کاملIron oxides stimulate sulfate-driven anaerobic methane oxidation in seeps.
Seep sediments are dominated by intensive microbial sulfate reduction coupled to the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). Through geochemical measurements of incubation experiments with methane seep sediments collected from Hydrate Ridge, we provide insight into the role of iron oxides in sulfate-driven AOM. Seep sediments incubated with (13)C-labeled methane showed co-occurring sulfate reduct...
متن کاملFormation of iron sulfide nodules during anaerobic oxidation of methane
The biomarker compositions of iron sulfide nodules (ISNs; upper Pliocene Valle Ricca section near Rome, Italy) that contain the ferrimagnetic mineral greigite (Fe3S4) were examined. In addition to the presence of specific terrestrial and marine biomarkers, consistent with formation in coastal marine sediments, these ISNs contain compounds thought to originate from sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB...
